Detroit Lions vs Kansas City Chiefs Match Player Stats (Oct 12, 2025)

Patrick Mahomes passed for 257 yards, threw three touchdowns, scored on a 1-yard keeper, and watched his offense finish the night without a single penalty or turnover. Detroit left Arrowhead down 30-17, and safety Brian Branch walked off with a one-game suspension after throwing a punch at JuJu Smith-Schuster when the final kneel-down ended. That was about as complete a performance as Kansas City put together all season.

How the Game Unfolded

Detroit came in on a four-game winning streak, carrying what was at that point the highest-scoring offense in the NFL. Dan Campbell’s game plan was straightforward: control the clock, keep Mahomes on the sideline, and make Kansas City earn every snap.

The opening drive looked like it was going to work. The Lions ran 15 plays over 9 minutes and 39 seconds, moved to the Kansas City 1-yard line, and dialed up a trick play. David Montgomery took the direct snap, threw it to Goff, who crossed the goal line. Officials huddled, then flagged Goff for illegal motion before the snap. A delay of game followed. A potential touchdown became a field goal.

“I’ve got to do a little research on exactly what went wrong,” Goff said afterward.

That sequence set the tone for everything that followed. Kansas City answered with an 8-play, 70-yard drive capped by Xavier Worthy’s 6-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. Mahomes went right back to work when the Lions retook a brief lead in the second quarter, driving 55 yards in 8 plays for a 1-yard rushing score of his own. The Chiefs led 13-10 at halftime and never gave the lead back.

Detroit’s secondary, already missing cornerbacks D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold (shoulder, inactive), and Avonte Maddox, couldn’t hold Kansas City in the second half. Mahomes opened the third quarter with an 81-yard touchdown drive capped by Marquise Brown’s 9-yard catch. When the Lions cut it to 20-17 on LaPorta’s fourth-quarter score, Kansas City responded immediately with a 9-play, 69-yard drive that ended with Brown’s second receiving touchdown of the night. A Butker field goal with 2:26 left sealed it.

“It was important to get that lead back and get the momentum and get the crowd going,” Mahomes said.

Dan Campbell made no attempt to minimize what happened:

“I’m disappointed, because it’s been a long time ago since you were watching someone kneel it three times in front of you, and it’s not even close. We got worked pretty good.”

Kansas City’s Offense

Mahomes’ stat line told one story. The efficiency numbers told a deeper one. His passing EPA per play registered at +0.47, ranking in the 93rd percentile across the league that week. He completed 22-of-30 passes for 257 yards and a 132.2 passer rating, added 5 scrambles for 34 yards, and sat behind an offensive line that allowed only two sacks and kept him clean on the majority of his dropbacks.

Travis Kelce led Kansas City receivers with 6 catches for 78 yards and six first-down conversions. JuJu Smith-Schuster was 3-for-3 on targets for 57 yards. Marquise Brown scored twice and finished with 45 yards on 4 catches. Isiah Pacheco carried the ground game with 51 yards on 12 attempts. Kansas City converted 2-of-3 fourth-down attempts and went 4-of-6 in the red zone, including four touchdowns.

Detroit’s Offense

Goff’s individual numbers were clean: 23-of-29, 203 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, 118.8 passer rating, and an 84.9 PFF grade. The problem wasn’t the quarterback. Detroit entered the red zone twice and scored a touchdown once. That conversion rate against a defense operating with zero substitution errors on the night was never going to be enough.

Jameson Williams was the Lions’ sharpest weapon with 6 catches for 66 yards and a 22-yard touchdown. Sam LaPorta caught 5 passes for 55 yards and found the end zone in the fourth quarter, earning an 85.5 PFF grade. Amon-Ra St. Brown drew the most targets on the team — 10 — but finished with 45 yards as Kansas City’s defense consistently closed off yards after the catch. Jahmyr Gibbs ran 17 times for 65 yards; Kansas City’s front held him to 2.5 yards before contact per attempt.

After the Final Whistle

When Mahomes took his last knee, Branch walked toward midfield. Mahomes extended a hand. Branch walked past him. Smith-Schuster stepped forward, words were exchanged, and Branch threw a right hook that put Smith-Schuster on the ground with a bloody nose. Branch then grabbed Smith-Schuster’s facemask and pulled his helmet off before Isiah Pacheco and other players intervened.

Campbell addressed it before anything else at his postgame podium.

“It’s inexcusable and it’s not going to be accepted here,” he said, confirming he’d called the Chiefs organization to apologize.

Branch spoke directly to reporters:

“I did a little childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don’t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there — I shouldn’t have did it. It was childish.”

The NFL suspended Branch one game without pay on October 13. He appealed. Hearing officer Jordy Nelson upheld the ruling on October 16. NFL VP Jon Runyan’s written notice to Branch stated the act “posed a serious risk of injury and clearly violated the standards of conduct and sportsmanship expected of NFL players.”

Mahomes Hits 300

His third touchdown pass in the third quarter gave Mahomes 302 career touchdowns including the postseason, making him the fastest player in NFL history to reach 300. He got there in 139 games, eight fewer than Aaron Rodgers needed. Taylor Swift, fiancée of Travis Kelce, was in the building. WNBA star Caitlin Clark was also at Arrowhead.

The Lions vs. Chiefs player stats from this October night exposed something about both teams that held through the rest of the 2025 season. Detroit, at full strength, was one of the hardest offenses in the league to shut down. Without three of its starting cornerbacks, the defense had a vulnerability that a quarterback like Mahomes could locate and punish on consecutive possessions. Kansas City, meanwhile, showed that their 3-3 record coming in was more about circumstance than capability. When the offense operated cleanly — no penalties, no self-inflicted damage — they were still the most difficult team in the conference to put away. Sunday night at Arrowhead made both of those things visible at the same time.
