October 20, 2025 | Ford Field, Detroit | Monday Night Football | ABC/ESPN | Attendance: 64,656
Jahmyr Gibbs waved off oxygen on the Lions’ bench Monday night. Trainers offered him a mask after his 78-yard touchdown run. He declined, went back out, and scored again.
Detroit beat Tampa Bay 24-9 in a game that was never as close as the final margin suggests. The Lions outgained the Buccaneers 379-251 in total yards, held them to 41 rushing yards, and converted zero of Tampa Bay’s red zone trips into points for three quarters — all while playing with four starting defensive backs unavailable.
Both teams entered Week 7 at 5-2. The difference between them was a 218-yard performance from a running back who made history the NFL hadn’t seen in 16 years.

Gibbs and the Lions’ Running Game
Detroit carried the ball 32 times for 164 yards, averaging 5.1 per carry against a Tampa Bay run defense that had held opponents to 3.7 yards per carry over the previous three weeks.
The 78-yard touchdown run came late in the second quarter with Detroit near its own end zone. Gibbs found a crease off left tackle, cleared the second level, and nobody was within reach of him by midfield. The possession covered 87 yards in four plays and one minute, 44 seconds. Detroit went into halftime up 14-0.
The third-quarter touchdown, a 5-yard spinning plunge, arrived on a drive where Gibbs had already gained 15 yards on the ground and 28 yards as a receiver. He finished the night with 218 scrimmage yards — 136 rushing and 82 receiving — and two scores. That total is the most by any Lions player since Calvin Johnson put up 329 against Dallas in 2013.
He became the first NFL player since Chris Johnson in 2009 to rush for 135-plus yards, receive for 80-plus, and score twice on the ground in the same game.
“If you can get him to second level, he can do the rest.” — Dan Campbell, Lions head coach
“He’s a very talented running back and when you miss a gap, he can turn it into a big play.” — Todd Bowles, Buccaneers head coach

Quarterback Comparison
Jared Goff finished 20 of 29 for 241 yards, a touchdown, and one interception. He also fumbled once — both turnovers came inside Tampa Bay territory and neither led to points. His 27-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown on Detroit’s opening drive set the offensive tone for the night.
Baker Mayfield took 50 drop backs, completed 56% of them, and posted a 66.1 passer rating. Detroit’s front generated 33 total pressures per PFF, with left tackle Charlie Heck responsible for nine, including two sacks. Aidan Hutchinson was the most disruptive individual pass rusher, producing 11 total pressures (0 sacks, 1 hit, 10 hurries).
The game’s pivotal sequence came midway through the fourth quarter. A Mayfield completion to Cade Otton on fourth down was initially ruled a first down, appeared to survive a review, then was overturned on a second review — handing Detroit possession near midfield. Jake Bates hit a 58-yard field goal off the left upright to push the lead to 24-9.
“As a skill group, we didn’t connect on a lot of plays. Once the defense knows we are going to have to pass, they can pin their ears back. That’s not a fair situation to the offensive line.” — Baker Mayfield

Key Receiving Performances
Amon-Ra St. Brown caught six passes for 86 yards and his NFL-leading seventh receiving touchdown of the 2025 season. Gibbs added 82 receiving yards on three catches, with 93 of those yards coming after the catch.
For Tampa Bay, rookie Tez Johnson was the one genuine offensive bright spot — four catches, 58 yards, and a 22-yard touchdown early in the third quarter that briefly closed the gap to five points. It was the game’s closest moment. Less than seven minutes later, Gibbs scored his second rushing touchdown.
Mike Evans returned after a three-game absence but left on a medical cart before halftime. Bowles confirmed a broken clavicle after the game.
“He’s going to be gone until toward the last of the season.” — Todd Bowles on Mike Evans
Emeka Egbuka saw 12 targets and pulled in just four for 58 yards. Sterling Shepard was Mayfield’s most reliable option underneath, catching all seven of his targets for 25 yards.
Detroit’s Defense and Pass Rush
The Lions’ secondary was missing four starters: Brian Branch was suspended, and Kerby Joseph, Terrion Arnold, and Avonte Maddox were all unavailable with injuries. Replacements held Tampa Bay to 228 passing yards and one touchdown.
Arthur Maulet, signed less than two weeks before kickoff, started at cornerback and delivered the game’s most important defensive play — an interception of Mayfield at the Tampa Bay 48 with 1:52 remaining in the first half that ended what could have been a scoring drive. Nick Whiteside earned a 90.6 PFF grade from the other cornerback spot.
Alim McNeill made his first appearance since tearing his ACL late in the 2024 season, playing 44 snaps. Taylor Decker returned at left tackle after missing two games with a shoulder injury.
Haason Reddick (Tampa Bay, OLB) left in the second half with knee and ankle issues.

What the Stats Show
Detroit’s turnovers that night — Goff’s fumble forced by Yaya Diaby and his interception by Maulet — both happened in Tampa Bay territory. Neither cost the Lions a point. Their defense held and their run game did the rest.
The Lions extended their own NFL record to 52 consecutive regular-season games without back-to-back losses. Under Dan Campbell, Detroit went to 13-3 in prime-time games and won their fifth straight Monday Night Football matchup.
Put the Buccaneers vs Lions box score side by side and the gap is obvious: 379 yards to 251, 164 rushing yards to 41, red zone conversions of 50% against 0% in the first three quarters. Gibbs’ 218 scrimmage yards explain most of the rest. A 5-2 Tampa Bay team came into Ford Field and had no answer for him — and the Lions never needed to be perfect to win by 15.
